Hämeenlinna

Only 98km from Helsinki lies the Viking age city of Hämeenlinna. Built in the late 13th century during the Second Swedish Crusade and formally becoming a city in 1639, Hämeenlinna is cultural and historic town. The centerpiece of this medieval town is the Häme Castle built along the shore of Lake Vanajavesi. Take a walk along the lake shore and stop at the castle to witness first-hand the changes the castle has been through in seven centuries. Currently restored to its former medieval glory, the castle also spent some time as a prison. Hämeenlinna has an active culture with many sport and exercise opportunities from jogging and hiking in the outdoor areas and cycling through the urban areas of the city is great way to explore this vibrant city.
